Viking Knit Bracelet by Ammonite DesignsViking Knit is thought by some to use the same principle that the Vikings used to knit fabrics (e.g. socks and similar).

The tradition continues today in unique handmade jewellery. Before the advent of chain mail, possibly as early as 850 AD, the Vikings used this knitting technique in making their formidable armour.

The art of Trichinopoly (as it is called) involves the weaving of wire around a mandrel.

The wire is then passed through a drawplate until the appropriate thickness of knit is reached.

The Viking Knit can then be embellished  with gems, Swarovski crystals and beads or alternatively, worn alone as a statement piece of unique jewellery.
